SHOT-BLASTING (ALUMINIUM OXIDE BLASTING)SHOT-BLASTING (ALUMINIUM OXIDE BLASTING)

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS

Surfaces are treated by the projection of an aluminium oxide-type abrasive in the shape of a spray generated by several turbines in an enclosed space. The abrasive is continuously recycled. The aluminium oxide used delivers a very low level of surface roughness (Ra reading). The speed of the projection of the abrasive may be controlled according to the surface roughness desired.

SHOT-BLASTING

This is a very old technique often used in the past that consists of hammering the surface of a part with a stream of beads in order to induce compressive stress that will stabilize and increase the service life of a part.
Shot-blasting is a surface treatment method that involves the spraying of projectiles (aluminium oxide) at very high speed against the parts to be treated.

The aim of this method is on one hand to remove all traces of oxide scale, rust or old paint (scouring), and on the other hand, to create a rougher surface to ensure different coatings adhere better to the surfaces to which they are applied.

APPLICATIONS

Shot-blasting may be used for the following purposes :

  • Paint stripping
  • Cleaning after heat treatment
  • Mechanical descaling
  • Preparation of surfaces before painting or Surface Treatment
  • Deburring
  • Surface treatment after laser-cutting
  • Shot penning treatment

All metals may be treated using this method, including alloys.
